Any list of the essential chords to begin learning on guitar must first include all of the open chords.
These would be
C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am, D, E, A
and to that we could also add a B7 since it is an open chord which thankfully provides a great substitute for replaying be much more difficult barre chord version of B major.
From there you should go into your dominant seven chords which would include these as the most essential to begin with…
C7, D7, E7, G7, A7 and of course we have already learned a B7.
Next in line would probably be the 4 main barre chord shapes, these barred chords are difficult initially to do however with committed practice and a healthy dose of patience and perseverance you will eventually learn how to play them just as easily as your open chords such as G or Em!
I promise they are well worth the effort since they will expand the vocabulary of songs you can pay on guitar by many thousands. Which is quite impressive if you think about it.
Of course, just learning the shapes of guitar chords is not nearly enough. You must spend a significant amount of time practicing going between all of them in little cycles in order to gain complete fluency in terms of how fast you are able to change from one chord to another. Many songs are deceptively simple and it’s only when you try to play along with it that you realize just how quickly many of the chords are changing. If you have not yet built up enough speed between the changing of your chords you will struggle to keep up with the song and be forever falling behind. This is a classic problem with beginners is always indicative of the fact that they have rushed into learning songs too early and before they have spent enough time practicing naked chord changes without any song in mind.
You do not need to pay for guitar lessons in order to learn all of these essential guitar chords.
